Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world, with an estimated population of 20.7 million as of 2019.

The history of Mumbai dates back to the 7th century CE when it was known as Heptanesia, a small fishing village. In the 16th century, the Portuguese took control of the area and renamed it Bom Bahia, meaning "good bay". The city was then taken over by the British in 1661 and renamed Bombay.

During the 19th century, Bombay became a major trading port and the gateway to India. It was also the center of the Indian independence movement, with Mahatma Gandhi leading the struggle for freedom from British rule.

In 1995, the city was officially renamed Mumbai, and it has since become a major financial and commercial hub. It is home to the world's largest film industry, Bollywood, and is also a major center for fashion, art, and culture. Mumbai is also home to some of India's most iconic landmarks, including the Gateway of India, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
