In a significant push for household financial fairness, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha has presented a proposal in the Rajya Sabha advocating for married couples to have the option of filing their Income Tax returns jointly. The Rajya Sabha MP highlighted that the current tax framework often penalises households with uneven incomes, leading to potential financial disadvantages for families where one spouse earns substantially more or less than the other. Chadha's initiative aims to introduce a mechanism for tax relief, ensuring that such households are not unfairly burdened. This optional joint filing system, if implemented, would allow married individuals to potentially optimise their tax liabilities and manage their finances more effectively, fostering a fairer tax environment across the nation.
